TREATMENT & DIAGNOSIS

Dehydrated and
dry skin

Dehydrated skin feels dry and often looks crepe, flaky and
can have an oily T-zone, what!!?. Dehydrated skin lacks water, this skin needs hydration, it is moisture dry. Dry skin on the other hand lacks oil, this skin type needs nourishing fatty acids and rich replenishing oils.

What’s the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

The interesting thing is both dry and dehydrated skin can feel the same; they both feel dry. When you have dry skin, your whole body feels dry and itchy.

You will hear yourself saying things like, “my skin soaks up the moisturiser and feels dry so quickly after I apply it”. Your skin needs replenishing oils like rosehip, jojoba, macadamia nut, and avocado oils rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to help nourish, replenish, smooth, strengthen, and help increase elasticity.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, lacks water. This skin does not like a lot of oil, and if you use products that are too oily, your skin usually breaks out and can become irritated with dry, flaky patches. Your skin needs hydrating.

Soothing and moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid, to saturate and bath the deeper layers of your skin in water. Niacinamide to balance and regulate your skin, and magnesium, zinc and copper to help improve the skin’s appearance and increase anti-ageing and skin revitalizing properties.

Treatment pack formulas work together to restore and relieve skin tightness and dryness.

Skin concern: Dry Skin, Dehydrated Skin, Normal Skin

What causes dehydrated or dry skin?

Your skin becomes dehydrated and dry when there is a lack of oil and water content in the outermost layer (stratum corneum) of our skin. Lack of oil and water is the critical difference between dehydrated, dry skin and healthy skin. The top layer of skin (epidermis) forms a protective barrier over the surface below.

Typically, the outermost layer has the same surface area as the skin layers beneath it. When the water content is low, however, this layer shrinks in volume and size. As it tightens against the skin below, it cracks, producing that flaky or scaly appearance we recognise as dry skin.

As skin cells move from the bottom layer (Basal Layer) towards the surface of the skin, they begin to change and sandwich together to form a protective oil and water barrier called the hydrolipidic film (acid mantle). This barrier is responsible for slowing down water loss (dehydration).

The outermost layer is our skins first line of defence and waterproofing system and is tightly knit together like tiles on a roof. Oil and water seal this protective layer. Water moves through the skin to the skin’s surface, and oils (lipids) travel up via the oil gland (sebaceous gland). Moisture allows the skin to remain supple and smooth, and oil gives skin nourishment and lubricates dry skin cells.

When skin oils are low, the skin has difficulty holding water, which then results in dryness, dehydration and scaliness.

How to restore dry skin and dehydrated skin

Whether your skin is dry or dehydrated any damage and malfunction of your surfaces protective barrier prevents the skin from retaining normal moisture levels. When the skin’s barrier is impaired, your skin loses moisture and elasticity. It cracks and wrinkles and can start a cycle of being dry, red, itchy and irritated and speeds up the ageing process of the skin.

Why are water and oil important to your skin?

Water hydrates skin cells and improves the appearance of skin and the oil forms an environmental shield, protecting our skin against external elements and maintains the internal environment. Oils are essential for maintaining proper moisture levels by preventing dehydration. Deficiency in essential fatty acids in products and diet can hinder the absorption of skincare into the skin. There is a moisture reservoir in the deeper layers of the skin that gives support to collagen and elastin and promotes moisture retention in the collagen fibres. Hyaluronic acid makes up about 70% of this reservoir of gel-like fluids and acts as a ‘molecular sponge’ attracting and holding moisture.

How do I restore my skin?

By using skin-identical ingredients that mimic those found in the skin such as hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, glycerol, fatty acids, sodium PCA and phosphatidylcholine to help transport ingredients into the skin. They combined with vital elements to help the skin’s natural ability to function normally and support the skin’s barrier function preventing dry, flaky skin.

The skin has a natural affinity to absorb botanical plant-based oils rich in essential fatty acids and super hydrating skin identical ingredients like hyaluronic acid, in cosmeceutical moisturisers and serums will hydrate, plump and boost essential skin hydration and repair.

Increase fatty acids

Essential Fatty acids (EFA’s) are vital elements in a natural skincare diet and are the building blocks for healthy cell membranes. Dry, inflamed skin with blackheads and whiteheads is often due to a lack of EFA’s. Rosehip, jojoba, macadamia nut and olive oil are called essential fatty acids for a reason, they are essential, to skin cell health. They are also crucial in the formation of the skins natural protective barrier, which keeps our skin hydrated, plump and young-looking.

Increase antioxidants and neutralise free radicals

Free radicals can damage skin cells and lead to weakened elasticity, collagen breakdown and the skin ageing prematurely. Skincare rich in potent antioxidants, like Vitamin A, (Retinal) Vit B (Niacinamide), Vit C (Kakadu Plum), Vit E, green tea extracts and resveratrol protect your skin and neutralises free radicals giving skin the best in skin repair and anti-ageing benefits.

Stop using products with petroleum-based ingredients like mineral oil that clog and suffocate the skin and make-up wipes, that contain alcohol and dry and irritate the skin and use products with ingredients your skin recognises as skin food. Good skin starts with good quality ingredients that work.
