When it comes to acne, the most common question asked is, “What is causing my pimples?” It is normal to want to know why your skin is clear sometimes and at other times there is an increase in breakouts.
- Not washing your face?
- Diet related?
Ask yourself these questions.
#1. Do you touch your face a lot?
Do you subconsciously touch your face or pick your skin? Our hands touch everything from money to handles in public toilets, this can add bacteria to the skin and cause more problems.
Skin Tip: If you fidget or pick your skin keep your hands occupied with something to keep them away from your face.
#2. Have you been eating more dairy than normal lately?
Of all the types of food a person eats, sugar and dairy have been associated with acne (especially cystic acne on the chin or jawline), Keeping a food journal; will help you identify patterns that occur. Often, food-induced breakout may occur within 24 hours after eating so keep this in mind as you investigate the cause. When you develop cystic breakout, it may be a sign that you’re taking in more dairy than your body can tolerate. Your skin acts, as an excretory system to rid the body of ‘toxins’ and to much dairy may be a trigger for your skin breakout?
The best way to determine if your acne cysts are directly related to your intake of dairy is to keep a food journal and illiminate dairy from your diet for a month. If you don’t develop any new cysts and you normally would have by now, then this might solve your problem! Clear-Skin-Serum-30ml help’s combat and prevent acne and normalises and balances.
#3. Do you wash your skin at night?
Bacteria love oil on the skin and make it the perfect breeding ground for blemishes. Sleeping with makeup on, and built up dirt, can absolutely trigger new blemishes.

#4. Are you about to start your menstrual cycle?
Many women experience a surge in blemishes at the start of their monthly cycle. This is completely normal, but can be very frustrating.
Skin Tip: Perhaps a *Vitamin B-6 supplement prior to your cycle may help, regulate hormonal imbalances, that can lead to breakout. *Calcium-magnesium supplements can also help when taken during this time. It’s also advisable to use an antibacterial, corrective and balancing serum such as Clear-Skin-Serum-30ml and Exfoliating-Serum 3 times a week layering it over the Clear Skin Serum during the time you have blemishes. Skin-Rescue-Creme-30ml with BHA’s (Salicylic acid) can be used as a spot treatment on stubborn blemishes. (*Consult your medical specialist first)
#5. Are you peri-menopausal or going through menopause?
Hormones are chemical messengers, created by our bodies to regulate everything from metabolism to reproductive cycles. When they fluctuate, they can trigger weight gain, depression, sleeplessness and fatigue in addition to adult acne and breakouts. A common sign for hormonal imbalances is when your monthly cycle is inconsistent and sporadic, or has recently stopped. Cortisol, the so-called stress hormone, increases inflammation and can cause breakouts, so tracking when you’re more stressed than normal could be helpful
Skin Tip: It’s advised to check with your medical practitioner to see if they have any recommendations to treat the imbalance internally. Our balancing cream may help – Balance-Me-30ml with wild yam is known as “the woman’s herb” and is specifically designed to comfort and balance menopausal skin.
#6. Have you taken a flight recently?
The cabins of planes have extremely low humidity, which causes the skin to become extremely dehydrated (lack of water). The dehydrated dead cells cause a buildup, which can trap oil underneath the skin resulting in post-flight breakouts and dehydration.
Skin Tip: Clear-Skin-Serum-30ml helps keep blemishes at bay and Skin-Repair-Serum-30ml with medical grade hyaluronic acid, helps plump and hydrate skin with an intensive moisture boost. Used in combination with Serum-Activating-Mist-50ml-new

When the season is changing and the weather is warm one day and cold the next, it can wreak havoc with your skin, leaving it unbalanced, irritted and prone to breakout.

#8. Are you using a Clarisonic brush?
Electric brushes such as the Clarisonic can be over stimulating on the skin for some people, resulting in breakouts.
Skin Tip: It may be more effective to use an Exfoliating-Serum that effective removes dead skin build up, as well as clean into the pore, helping to remove blockages and build up. The Clarisonic brush cannot ‘get’ into the pore effectively where the congestion is located.
#9. Are you using cleansers with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)?
An irritating detergent used in shampoos, and panthenol, a potential pore-clogging ingredient found in conditioner.
Skin Tip: Using Clear-Skin-Cel-Cleanser-120ml or Daily-Enzyme-Wash-50ml free from SLS, will help keep skin clean and will not irritate or strip the natural protective barrier of the skin. We would also recommend using a shampoo and shower gel free from SLS.
#10. Do you use Liquid or Pan-Cake Foundations?
Using thick liquid foundations containing mineral oil clogg and congest the skin causing breakouts as well as continuously using the same ‘dirty’ makeup sponge which can increase and spread breakout.
Skin Tip: Introduce natural Mineral-Veil-Foundations that are perfectly matched to your skin tone and sit on the surface of the skin, giving you protection, cover and a flawless look, without clogging pores or causing breakout. (Our foundations do NOT contain Mineral_oil) Supernatural Mineral Veil foundation is made up of natrual milled minerals such as iron oxides and zinc oxide, to create a perfect and safe foundation that is not absorbed into the skin.

Eat fresh living food, free from chemical additives, colour & synthetic preservatives.
#12. Do you give yourself mini facials?
Have you given your skin a mini facial at home with a scrub, peel, and a mask? You’ll want to record any changes or additions to your skin care routine. While you want to find the cause of your breakouts, it’s also helpful to look at when your skin was clear. You may have introduced a new product that is assisting with ‘detoxing’ your skin and eliminating toxins.
Skin Tip: Remember your skin works from the inside out – if toxins and debris are trapped under the skin, when using well formulated active ingredients they encourage the removal of toxins. Refine-Exfoliating-Serum-30ml can help keep new breakouts from forming when used regularly and assist in keeping the pores free from dead skin build up, which traps the oil and causes blemishes. Drink filtered water to help elimination and hydration.
#13. Have you introduced a new skin care product to your skin?
When your skin is introduced to new products, sometimes you might suffer from some initial blemish purging, (detoxing) especially if the products are giving your skin a good ‘clean’ and more exfoliation than normal. If it continues on more than two weeks, then they may not be a good fit for your skin.
Skin Tip: When introducing new products to your skin, it’s always recommended to use one product for 3-4 days before adding in a second one. If your skin is over ‘reacting’, you’ll be able to determine which product you should introduce more slowly or perhaps discontinue using. Make sure you are using products that are recommended for your skin type and skin condition.
#14. Have you started taking medication? Every drug will affect the body differently. Medications can cause stress on the nervous system, which elevates hormone levels (adrenals). This can contribute to the wear and tear of connective tissue resulting in loose, sagging skin and increased blemishes. Oral medications, colds, flu’s, and infections can compromises your immune system and elevates hormones that may lead to breakout. Make a note of any changes in your health.
Skin Tip: Check the side effects of the medication and consult with your physician.
If clear skin is your end goal, then all these factors need to be considered.
